ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is inspired and galvanized by the natural world and the human impact upon that world, as well as issues surrounding social justice. Much of my work features endangered species and the impact of global climate change upon both animals and humans. As we continue to navigate through this sixth mass extinction event (and the only one that is human-caused), I choose to focus on those species most at risk as humans continue to burn fossil fuels, destroy forests for palm oil, deplete our oceans, and engage in factory-farming. As witnessed by the recent confluence of natural disasters, the importance of focusing on the natural world and future generations of humans and animals has never been more urgent.

I love using metal leaf in my paintings for multiple reasons. These metals are of the earth, they are considered ‘precious’, and therefore I feel they give a reverential quality to the subject matter (similar to the Madonna and Child paintings of Giotto and others of the Gothic/Proto-Renaissance). I also love, aesthetically, the way light reflects off of the metal, changing as the viewer moves and as the light in the space shifts.

I like focusing on young people, as they will inherit the planet that we leave them-and they are also among the strongest and most influential voices in the climate change movement. Diversity and inclusion are very important to me as well, thus I ‘cast’ historical figures and characters from plays accordingly. In visualizing these characters in new ways, and more representational of the populations in which we live, we see their stories through fresh eyes.
